DESCRIPTION:Following an overwhelming response\, The Engine Room Sound Art Competition received over 170 submissions from more than 40 countries\, showcasing a diverse and innovative range of sound art practices. This year’s finalists will present their work at Morley Gallery from 28 April to 16 May 2025. \n\n\n\nThe sound art exhibition offers audiences unique experiences in cutting-edge sound art in various forms – including audio works\, audiovisual pieces\, interactive installations\, and sound sculptures. Alongside the exhibition\, The Engine Room 2025 will feature a programme of performances and workshops.  A prestigious Penny Lecture will be led by the exhibition curators Camilo Salazar and Matthew Gardner alongside Morley College sound art lecturers with an essential history of sound art and experimental music. \n\n\n\nThe Engine Room continues Morley’s long-standing legacy in electronic and experimental music\, following in the footsteps of pioneering figures such as Cornelius Cardew\, a former music tutor at the college and founder of the Scratch Orchestra. \n\n\n\n The organisers extend their gratitude to an esteemed panel of judges\, Sarah Nicolls\, Mariam Rezaei\, John Richards\, who carefully reviewed the submissions and selected the works that will be exhibited. SUMMARY:Penny Lecture: Influencers Reshaping Ceramics with James Evans
DESCRIPTION:SOLD OUT\n\n\n\nPenny Lecture – as part of London Craft Week\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nJames Evans is sculptural ceramicist and esteemed Morley ceramics tutor who uses metal leaf and powders to create unique surfaces for his ceramics works.   In this special Penny Lecture for London Craft Week\,  James will explore the study\, techniques\, influencers\, and culture that have shaped his work – and show how to draw on external influences in developing creative practice.   James’s story starts in rural Suffolk with dreams of becoming a St. Ives potter up until now as a member of the Royal Society of Sculptors\, international exhibitor and whose work is part of the V&A Collection. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nSpeaker Biography \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nJames enjoys creating references that are incomplete and open to interpretation\, allowing the observer to mull over its past/present purpose.  For the past five years James has been developing new forms and surface treatments to his work\, that break with tradition to forge new paths of expression in ceramics. His work has become more reflective of the past. There is evidence of age with use of rusting iron and peeling metal leaf\, and the forms fractured presence. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHe says much of his work is intuitive\, but the current references are from his childhood\, between the ages of ten and mid-teens. His weekends and school holidays were spent on the shingle beaches of Suffolk\, climbing in or on the old gun posts and pill boxes. The sea and weather had twisted and contorted these slabs of concrete revealing the rusted iron skeletal supports. These forms were in stark contrast to the shifting single and hedgerows with bramble tentacles reaching over the grey slabs. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nThe use of precious metals is an approach James has developed where the value of an object can be elevated by its presentation or surface treatment.  In this informative lecture James will uncover the processes that allow ceramics to take on new and textures and shapes to make art in ceramics.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for an exploration into the process and possibilities of creating wearable bio-fabrics in your own home with Lynda Kinne\, Head of Visual Arts at 91��ѡ and Jean Ross-Timmes\, Fashion Tutor & Technician at Morley. \n\n\n\nOver the past two years Morley’s Materials Lab and BA (Hons) Fashion Design students have transformed simple kitchen ingredients into textile samples without the aid of hi-tech equipment or complex chemistry. In this Penny Lecture\, Lynda and Jean will reveal what they have learnt through experimentation and with expert scientific guidance from colleagues working at the Natural History Museum.    \n\n\n\nLearn how a bottle of kombucha can be transformed into fabric that can be stitched and how food waste can become a bioplastic. Discover the world of mycelium (fungi) production and how top fashion houses are now using it in the creation of high-end accessories. Bio-materials are increasingly on the fashion map – be the first to hear about this amazing world of innovation at Morley! \n\n\n\nSpeaker Biographies \n\n\n\nLynda Kinne is Head of School for Visual Arts. Lynda has decades of fashion industry experience\, running her own fashion brand\, A La Disposition\, with husband Daniel Kinne. She is also a professional photographer\, having recently shown work in Morley’s ‘Hidden Threat’ exhibition. Lynda is a strong believer in sustainability and has previously partnered with the Natural History Museum for their Fashion (R)evolution museum lates catwalk. \n\n\n\nJean Ross-Timmes is BA (Hons) Fashion Design Technician and Fashion Tutor. She is a freelance seamstress and pattern cutter working on bespoke\, often specialist\, projects. Jean has several years experience assisting with the conservation team at Fashion & Textile Museum. She believes sustainable practice is essential to the future of the fashion industry\, and the planet.

DESCRIPTION:Prokofiev: A summer day \n\n\n\nProkofiev: Overture on Hebrew themes\, op. 34 \n\n\n\nProkofiev: Sinfonietta op. 5/48 \n\n\n\nShostakovich: Piano Concerto no. 2 \n\n\n\nPetros Moschos – piano  \n\n\n\nThe Morley Chamber Orchestra conducted by Charles Peebles \n\n\n\nA celebration of two towering figures of 20th-century Russian music. \n\n\n\nThis evening’s programme explores the vibrant contrasts and lyrical depth of Sergei Prokofiev and Dmitri Shostakovich. Opening with A Summer Day\, Prokofiev evokes scenes of innocence and nostalgia through delicate orchestration. His Sinfonietta\, composed in his early years and later revised\, showcases his signature wit\, rhythmic vitality\, and neoclassical clarity. The concert concludes with Shostakovich’s Piano Concerto No. 2\, a sparkling and humorous work written as a birthday gift for his son—full of charm\, lyricism\, and youthful exuberance. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nBiographical Note \n\n\n\nPetros Moschos has repeatedly appeared in concerts in Greece\, Germany\, Italy\, Czech Republic\, Slovakia\, Spain\, Switzerland\, Ireland\, United Kingdom\, Ukraine\, Israel\, Venezuela\, Canada and the United States of America. He has participated in international festivals such as Brno International Festival\, Janacek Festival\, Athens and Epidaurus Festival and others and has performed in venues such as National Concert Hall\, (Dubin)\,  Philharmonic Hall (Odessa)\,  Olympia Theatre\, Steinway Hall (Miami)\, Teresa Carreno Theatre (Caracas)\, Teatro Regio di Torino (Turin)\, Teatro Margarita (Sicily)\, Meistersinger Ηalle (Nuremberg)\,  Musée Olympique (Lausanne)\,  Fairfield Hall\, St. Johns Smith Square\, South Bank Centre (London)\, Athens Megaron Concert Hall and many others. \n\n\n\nHe has been soloist with\, Filarmonica di Torino\, Bad-Wiesse Orchester\, Israeli Festival Orchestra\, Fürther Streichholzer Orchester\, Florida Classical Orchestra\, Janacek Chamber Orchestra\, Brampton Symphony Orchestra\, Morley Chamber Orchestra\, Camden Filarmonia\, Chamber Academy Orchestra\, Venezuela Youth Orchestra\, University of London Symphony Orchestra\, Thessaloniki State Orchestra and others. \n\n\n\nHe has recorded for the BBC\, Czech\, Israeli and Bavarian Radio\, and CDs with Deux-Elles\, Genuin and Classics PMC 333. \n\n\n\nHe has won several National Competitions as well as the “Lilian Davies” award (Royal Academy of Music\, London) and the “Eleni Mykonou” prize of the Academy of Athens. Also\, in collaboration with Dimitris Karydis\, their piano duo (Piano Duo ‘Antithesis’) has received top prizes in international music competitions such as ‘Murray Dranoff’ Competition (USA)\, ‘Schubert Competition’ (Czech Republic)\, the ‘Bellini Competition’\, ‘Rovere d’Oro Competition’\, IBLA Grand Prize (Italy)\, the ‘Donostia Hiria’ (Spain) \n\n\n\nHe is also a member of the Tetrachord Piano Ensemble\, a group of four pianists on two pianos\, where they perform rare and contemporary works for this unusual combination. \n\n\n\nPetros studied with Dimitris Toufexis\, Piers Lane\, Frank Wibaut and James Gibb graduating with a Soloist Diploma (Award of Excellence) from the National Conservatory of Athens\,  Diploma of Advanced Studies with Merit from the Royal Academy of Music in London\, Master of Arts in Music with distinction\, and Doctor of Musical Arts from City University of London. \n\n\n\nPetros Moschos teaches piano at City Literary Institute\, Morley College\, as well as at the Centre for Young Musicians – a division of the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. His students have won prizes in international competitions and festivals (Japan Chopin Competition\, Asia Pacific Youth Music Competition\, Croydon Festival\, North London Festival\, Brighton College Young Musician of the Year etc.). He has also been awarded a «Certificate of Recognition for Dedicated Excellent Music Teaching» by “Hong Kong Music for Youth”.

SUMMARY:Penny Lecture: Morley's Murals - Magic Walls
DESCRIPTION:In this special Penny Lecture\, join Morley’s archivist Elaine Andrews and celebrated artist and Morley painting tutor Kate Wilson to hear the inside story of the Morley’s mural’s past and present.    \n\n\n\nMorley’s murals were painted by leading twentieth century British artists – Edward Bawden\, Eric Ravilious and Charles Mahoney\, John Piper\, Bridget Riley and Martin Froy.  \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nThe Bawden\, Ravilious and Mahoney murals made Morley’s name in the 1930’s.  Leader of the opposition Stanley Baldwin opened the new murals commissioned for the Morley’s Refreshment Room and Hall to widespread acclaim.   But only a decade later these most famous murals were completely destroyed by a huge wartime bomb\, and 57 lives lost.   In the years that followed\,  Morley remained determined to be known as an adult education college at the cutting edge of art – with outstanding murals which are enjoyed by generations of adult learners. \n\n\n\nInformed by new research and featuring Morley’s rich archives\, Elaine Andrews and Kate Wilson will reveal the secrets of Morley’s murals – the role of Anthony Blunt in commissioning two giant murals measuring 58 feet long by 8 feet tall in the new Emma Cons Hall\, Bridget Riley’s donation to Morley\, and the mystery of the missing murals!  All this and more – not to be missed!
